LA Found Plants 3
Found this hibiscus-like flower in a hedge on the way to the Asian Grill and Donut Shop early this morning. I used my green thrift store polo shirt and my mouse pad. Also, I have been using medium so the paint is more slippery, trying to have the paint application be more fluid.

Found Plants 1
Yo.
Made it to LA.
Am working temporarily in a dark place (physically, not noir-ish) and so have bought a $35 LED bulb. Noon light! But the shadows are very dark and sharp, so I have to think on this, what to do.

Bluebonnets 3 (2013)
This time I tried more color. I'm working the flowers first because they jump all over the place like tulips, then doing moving stuff, then going back to do a different section of the painting, etc. I am using an led lightbulb ($14!) which emits very little heat so the flowers don't wilt and move as much. This will be a great light to paint a chicken by, which is fun and I haven't done for a while. The incandescent bulb pretty much cooks the chicken so you have to race.

Bluebonnets 2 (2013)
I've got two done, so happy ..... getting an hour here and there in between crises. Sometimes it's just enough to be painting!

Bluebonnets 1 (2013)
Been gone so long.
I am in the middle of moving from Texas to Los Angeles, and oh, moving is hellish.
I stole a morning to paint the bluebonnets, which I have done every March I have lived here.
I have 6 other panels prepared and hope to have a little run of them if I can manage it and don't get caught.

The Last Bluebonnets
The bluebonnets are on the wane here, only a few left and those look exhausted. I admit to poaching the yellow flower from the library beds early this morning. I think it is a kind of day lily, so it only had one day of glory anyway. These look like tiny orchids and float on long stems above the thin grass-like leaves. I was very economical with my brush strokes here, did not repair much in the process of painting it and mostly tried to leave the edges alone.

Black Pansies, Pink Box

One more black pansy -- I had a smallish block of time for painting today, and so another little one.

Pink Cyclamen/Orange
This is a plant brought back from the dead. I have been trying to get to it to paint before it got any more complicated. Those pink heads bunch up into an unrecognizable mass really quickly, then there are all those patterned leaves to deal with. They are strange and beautiful, though.

Cyclamen with Rose Background
I used to buy these flowers when I lived in Boston, in the dead of dreary winter of course, and they were so intensely colored, like a flame, except for the white ones which were altogether pure. And they are in sort of frozen motion with their petals flung out every which way, not like a flower at all, but more an idea of a flower. I always managed to kill them fast, but here in Texas I have figured out their living requirements: a sill in strong light and a saucer underneath to put water in, instead of watering from the top. And water every day. I have managed to keep them happy for a couple of months now, and I have another pale pink one, that I rescued and have in rehab hoping to have a go at it soon.

Winter Primrose
OK, Ok, I've had some fish complaints. Here is another go at the grocery store primroses. The leaves were a luxurious tropical jungle, nice counterpoint to the big freeze we have here. My other news is that I did paint the underside of my glass palette a neutral grey and it is so wonderful -- much better than white. It is easier to gauge color against the neutral background - much, much easier. Oh yes, also, this painting is my contribution to the challenge for this month (flowers) on the web site sometexasartistsliketopaint.blogspot.com. To see everyone's entries, clickhere.

The Plaid Cloth

I have had the plaid cloth for a while, looking at it, thinking I would sneak up on it someday when it was just the right day for too much pink and today was the day.

Pansies in the Mirror

By now I am familiar with the form and color of these pansies and feeling pretty friendly about them, so I thought I'd play with a mirror and see if I could abstract a bit. That could be a very long road - I can see a hundred ways for it to go, but everything mostly ends up in Diebenkorn.

Pansies in Small Vase
Another. I'm trying to work out some color stuff here. Such as, what is too much, and how can it be used most effectively. The end of the spectrum I'm not so familiar with is the quiet end. I know very well the over the top part. Currently I am in love with grays and want to learn how to use them to my own ends.

Pansies and Striped Cloth
On this one I had a nice experience. Things were going along swimmingly and when I got to the bottom of the glass I realized that the stripes reflected in it, more than just through the base, in fact all up the left side. And I decided not to put them in because it was to0 much information. Very liberating. I don't think I have ever edited anything out before.
